What is the University Nationals Competition?

University Nationals is a competition held annually organised by UniSport Australia. This annual event hosts 43 universities to compete across a range of sports, from football to netball and rugby 7’s. Each year the competition is held on a different city in the country, with this year’s host city being the Gold Coast. The subtropical weather and easy access to the water makes it an ideal location for the university games to be held.

What happened in the 2022 Uni Games?

In the 2022 nationals, the host city was Perth, drawing hundreds of student athletes to Western Australia. Last year showed the increasing competitiveness between the universities across different sports. Amongst the most anticipated being volleyball and touch football. There were some universities that dominated across the board, however the results showed the competitiveness within the universities of New South Wales and Victoria, as these took the most wins overall. According to UniSport Australia, the overall winners of the week-long event was the University of Sydney, as they dominated across all sports in both men’s and women’s categories. They especially predominate in sports like water polo and rowing. Although they won the overall competition, there were other universities with competitive athlete who still got some recognition. Bond University came in first place for Overall Per Capita Champion, and Western Sydney University came in first for the John White Spirit Award.

Uni Games 2023

The games this year will be held across different sports venues and universities in the Gold Coast, with Judo being the only sport hosted in Brisbane. Although some sports start competing on Saturday the 23rd of September, the official inauguration is not held until Monday 25th, and will run until Friday 29th.

University Nationals Predictions

The predictions for this year’s competition point to the University of Sydney taking most of the victories once again, as they have done it in the past few years. There are some strong teams for sports like basketball, with La Trobe University looking to defend their title as winners obtained in Perth last year.

UniSport Australia is looking to incorporate sports with culture and student life. Throughout the week, there will be food and beverages provided for athletes and attendees, and most events are open for the community to come enjoy the matches and support their local university.
